With just a month and a couple of days short from returning to the Philippines, I would say that I had a well-rounded experience in China. Part - studying, Part - travelling, Part - meeting people from around the world and Part - drawing/sketching/art-ing or what not, it has been a memorable experience. Thanks Chinese Government for the full scholarship and the opportunity to learn Chinese and speak to legit Chinese people (plus allowance!).

Aside from Chinese, I've been practicing digital painting in my down time (also since I didn't really bring traditional art materials and the art materials here are expensive) and sketching some concept art ideas. Am also planning to create my own portfolio website and new branding. Hopefully, once I get back to the Philippines, I can quickly find a fulltime job and get into some interesting side projects/freelance.

Does anyone know some cool side projects or people who need freelance work? I'm free.

Winter break has begun and I'm currently sitting in my room writing this entry WITHOUT wearing 2 layers of clothes. Being in T-shirts and shorts is a wonderful feeling. Trying to soak up Philippine warmth before I enter the Freezer with is Beijing.

I've been using my downtime meeting friends, editing my portfolio and going through a LOT of check-ups (doctor, derma, dentist, eye doctor, you name it I've probably went already). One of my main TTDs when I start my second term in Chinese Language is to get a freelance or part-time job in creatives. So hopefully my newly edited resume and portfolio would help me get a job (and extra money whoot!)

Other plans when I get back to Beijing (with a free month of February to spare!) is to travel to the southern parts (arguably where most of China's beautiful scenic spots are): Guilin, Hunnan, Fuzhou & Xiamen (the province of my ancestors). Also planning to celebrate Chinese New Year with my language partner and family (and am awkwardly invited to her cousin's wedding as well :|)

Best part is, one of my best friends is coming over on February to study Chinese Language for a year as well. Beijing's going to get more interesting for my 2nd term: Shanghai F1 Grand Prix on April, Amusement Park in GuangZhou, Art and National Museums (which I've never visited yet) and learning more Mandarin!

Looking forward for the next 5 months ahead!

Life in Beijing

Currently, I'm in Beijing on a Chinese Language Scholarship for 1 year. So far, it's been interesting learning (or relearning) Mandarin and meeting people from around the world and exploring China. My top two places so far are the Lavender Gardens (basically a large garden full of Lavenders obviously) and the 798 Art District (a German style industrial zone turned Gallery and Artist area). Other notable places are nearby Tian Jin that has a European-style village and the Hu Tongs that have a lot of unique, quirky street stores.

It has been a pleasure to easily access Deviantart even with the Great Firewall of China. Most of the artwork I'll be posting from this point (within this year) will probably be more eastern/ China influenced. So stay posted!

After countless days of neglect and starvation, I'm currently fixing my deviant art account: slowly bringing it back to the present times!
I recently just graduated from University and entered the world of employment, but I think for most creatives "employment" needs a more comprehensive description:

Employment = Freelance + Part-time job + Intensive course on 3d modeling & texturing.

Recently, these 3 "parts" of employment been a blast! I get to do different projects, challenge myself and learn new things. It has also been busy and stressful and currently not putting a lot of stuff in the financial department, but I'm slowly getting more clients through awesome friends (online and 'physically here') who believe in me! :3 Some freelance projects that I've just worked on include an infographic poster for a health conference, typography poster and magazine illustrations that were balanced parts of fun and stress, while my 'stable' part time job is coming up with promotional designs for a small marketing & events agency. 3d classes have been challenging (you really have to be Obsessive - Complusive with the meshes), not to mention that classes are 8: 30 to 12:30 nn every MWF (damn early for my tastes) but I'm glad to be learning something that will TRULY help me land jobs that I want to have in the (hopefully) near future.

I LOVE the flexibility and the project - based aspect of the jobs I've worked on, and this will affect my decision on whether to get a full-time creative job or stick to being a freelancer in the future. What do you guys think? should I stick with my freelance framework (I probably have to build my networks) or try out a full-time creative job? (for magazines, ad agency, games/animation companies)

Back to Reality

2 min read
It's been about three months since I came back from my Junior Term Abroad in Singapore and I've definitely used more of my artistic skills there than in my actual courses in the Philippines. I've learned a lot more about advertising and digital media through my awesome local and international friends I've met in my Singapore stay.

But I'm back here now in reality, buried deep in homework, projects and tests. I have the usual no-time-to-do-big-artworks-only-doodles phase and crave for free days to spend with my art materials. I promise to upload more stuff when I catch up with time.

Recent projects I've done was a poster and a tarp for an org. and joining an "express yourself" competition wherein I had to paint this mickey looking figurine.
I made it look like a weird dino-dragon.
I ended up with a consolation prize that gives me yet another free figurine to paint on.
Awesome.

Check the Mickey model out in my gallery.
Don't give up on me guys, I'm still hanging in here...only not so much because of SCHOOL :((
