Artist's Comments

Finally, im done with this. I've been working on and off for this artwork. I think i started it early this year when i still had classes. So i had to juggle schoolwork, art class with this.

Basically, the theme's "thinking outside the box"

1. I wanted it to look like a production set like the backgrounds you see in plays. It's supposed to look "flat" because i never really did that yet for my other artworks.

2. used more geometric shapes, especially squares and rectangles to add to the "box" effect.

So why the theme?

The old man in the artwork is trying to find what this box does and he's focusing on what's INSIDE the box...trying to figure out it's magic. He is too focused in looking inside that he does not see his granddaughter pointing OUTSIDE the room to reveal the box's magical ability to paint their world in technicolor. So yeah, think outside the box.

But I also want to point out that there are 3 "boxes" in the artwork. The magical box, the box room and the paper which is a box also. (though more rectangular than square). I believe that there is no true "thinking outside the box".

One person's "box" or lifestyle could be different to another person's "box". Each person in the world will never have an identical box, thus negating the "thinking outside the box" notion.

I mean, if one person changes and thinks outside his usual experiences, another person would be living in that changed experience and would want to get outside his box too.

It's a neverending cycle.

One would never acheive true thinking outside the box because another person has already thought about it.

whew. This artwork is for my shifting course...because maybe it is better for me.

Done with:
Ballpen, watercolor, liquid eraser

This makes me miss traditional illustration.

I like the way you made use of the liquid eraser to create strong highlights. Your skill with the ballpoint pen is very good the gradating shades give the piece a tangible feel in spite of the flat effect you were after. The way you handled watercolor here is also good, the shading was consistent with your pen hatches.

On a sidenote, I think the grandfather's torso could have been a bit shorter. That's just pretty much it.

Overall, this is a very good traditional piece, especially since you were working with a concept.

Speaking of which, that reminds me- it's like no matter how much you strive for a unique style, there will be those similar to yours, since they've also thought outside boxes simlar to yours. I think.

Everyone's always saying 'Go outside the box' so now the 'Outside the box' way of thinking is already the box. Why not go back inside.. Hahaha! *hug*

I'm actually spending more time analyzing the angles of the rays than critizing the work since there's nothing else to critize. :XD:
